Senior Firefighter – Casual

Kananaskis Emergency Services is seeking highly motivated and enthusiastic team players to fulfil the role of Driver/Operator within the organization. Reporting to the Station Officer, the Senior Firefighter is responsible on an as-needed basis for all fire and rescue operations and operational assignments as provided from the Kananaskis Emergency Services Centre. This will include emergency and non-emergency operations as related to fire suppression, vehicle rescue, medical first response, structural rescue, hazardous material interventions, wildland urban interface, wildland fire suppression, helicopter operations and assisting with backcountry/slope rescue. As well as routine equipment maintenance, station duties, training, and public engagement activities.

Shift Structure

Shifts are 24 hours in duration. Senior Firefighters are required to provide a minimum of 4 shifts of availability per month and work a minimum of 2 shifts per month.
 
As part of the application process, applicants are requested to submit the Casual Availability Form indicating the usual days of availability they have within any given month. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma
  • Accredited NFPA 1001 Level 2
  • Accredited NFPA 1002 Pump Operator
  • ICS100
  • Valid Class 3(or higher) Valid Operator’s License with air brake endorsement, less than 6 demerits
  • Standard First Aid, CPR-BLS/HCP.
  • 2 years experience with a municipal fire department
  • Starting wage: $22.00 - $25.00/hr

Preference will be given to applicants that have completed NFPA 1002 Aerial Operator, NFPA 1051 Wildland Firefighter, Advanced First Aid, Emergency Medical Responder training, have a demonstrated knowledge of the Kananaskis Improvement District and have completed an accredited Defensive Driving Course. 

This position is with the Kananaskis Improvement District and is not part of the Government of Alberta or Alberta Union of Provincial Employees. 

Selection Process

Individuals selected to continue through the process will be required to pass a physical assessment, driving and pumping competency evaluation, and interview. Successful candidates will be required to complete additional onboarding training and shadow shifts prior to commencing operations. Positions anticipated to start March 2025; multiple positions are available.

Physical Assessment

The physical assessment is comprised of an aerobic capacity and job specific task assessments. The physical assessment will be completed following the aptitude test.

Candidates are required to complete and submit the Medical Self Assessment Form as part of their application to assess their suitability to participate in the physical assessment.

Successful applicants will begin in March 2025.
