Lieutenant – Casual Position

Kananaskis Emergency Services is seeking a highly motivated, team player to fill this position.

Reporting to the Fire Chief, the Lieutenant will fill in for full-time officer vacancies as they arise. The Lieutenant is responsible on a relief basis for all fire/rescue operations, training and operational assignments as provided from the Kananaskis Emergency Services Centre (KESC). This will include emergency and non-emergency operations related to structural fire suppression, vehicle rescue, emergency medical services, structural rescue, hazardous material interventions, wildland/urban interface fire suppression and support for technical rescue operations. Completion of fire prevention and public education activities as required and maintenance of equipment, vehicles, and facilities to ensure the readiness of emergency response equipment.

Training and supervision of the Paid on-Call Firefighter staff represents a significant portion of work in this position. While on duty, the Lieutenant is expected to deliver instruction for regularly scheduled training sessions, lead on-shift training with staff, provide appropriate supervision and oversight of members under their command and ensure the safety and well-being of all members.   

Additionally, the Fire Officer provides after-hours emergency call answering and dispatching for Alberta Parks Kananaskis Dispatch. Duties include emergency call answering/processing, notification to response agencies (RCMP, EMS, Conservation Officers, Public Safety Specialists, etc.), coordination and dispatching of resources, radio communications, reporting and documentation. Dispatch specific training will be provided as part of on-boarding.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma.
  • NFPA 1001 – Level 2.
  • NFPA 1002 Driver, Pump, and Aerial Operator.
  • NFPA 1021 – Level 1.
  • NFPA 1041 – Level 1.
  • NFPA 1051 or NFPA 1140
  • Current Advanced First Aid or Emergency Medical Responder certification (or higher) in last five years.
  • Valid Class 3 or better Alberta Operators License with Q endorsement and less than 6 demerit points; and
  • Minimum 5 years related experience.   

Preference will be given to applicants that have completed additional NFPA 1021 training, NFPA 1041 – Level 2, ICS 200 or higher, Blue Card Command and have a demonstrated knowledge of the Kananaskis Improvement District. Experience with Microsoft Office programs such as Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word and Access would also be an asset.

Wage: $30.00/hour.

Selection Process

Interview/Training Presentation/Command Scenario

Candidates will be contacted for a panel interview. Interviews do include situational based questions, however, do not require the use of a specific answering format such as STAR.
 
Candidates will be required to develop a lesson plan and deliver a 15-20 minute theoretical lesson on a topic provided at the time an interview is offered. Candidates will need to develop a visual presentation to accompany their lesson plan and must provide both the lesson plan and presentation via email prior to the interview date. The lesson will be delivered following the interview.
 
Candidates will also complete an incident command scenario based upon a single unit incident. The command scenario will take place following the training presentation.
 
Physical Assessment

The physical assessment is comprised of an aerobic capacity and job specific task assessments.

Candidates are required to complete and submit the Medical Self Assessment Form as part of their application to assess their suitability to participate in the physical assessment.

Final Review & Offer

Successful candidates will be contacted with a verbal offer. Upon acceptance, a written offer will be sent via email along with a request for personal records documentation (drivers abstract, criminal records check and doctors medical clearance). This has been done to reduce the cost to applicants until they are successful in their application.
