Kananaskis Improvement District is a large, multi-use land base with recreation area, provincial parks, wildland provincial parks, ecological reserves, and public crown lands with lots to experience and enjoy.   
 
Kananaskis Improvement District boundaries comprise that of the Kananaskis Country. After going through many amalgamations of improvement districts, the area bounded by Kananaskis Improvement District was established in 1983 as Improvement District no. 5. The name Kananaskis Improvement District was established by Ministerial Order in 1996.

Numerous facilities exist within Kananaskis Improvement District. From fixed roof accommodations, tenting, comfort camping, and budget lodging to Alberta Parks operated facilities, information and learning centres, and day use sites.

In Kananaskis Country, there are 49 parks of various classifications administered by Alberta Forestry and Parks. Regulations affecting visitor use apply to these lands.  Kananaskis Country also includes Public Land Use Zones administered by Alberta Environment and Protected Areas.  Specific regulations may apply to these lands. It is the responsibility of each visitor to know the rules wherever you choose to recreate.
