RecruitmentWant to become a firefighter? Like many Emergency Services providers in Canada, Kananaskis Emergency Services relies on Call-Out Firefighters to complete the response team required to provide community level services and emergency response capabilities throughout the municipality. Before applying to become a Call-Out Firefighter, it is important that prospective firefighters realize what is involved in being a fire department member before making the necessary commitment. This information is intended to describe how Kananaskis Emergency Services operates and gives you some background information before you make any decisions. You are encouraged to discuss this information with your family and employer and to contact any of the members of the department if you require additional information. How often do we train and when do we respond to calls? We support our members with the best opportunities to advance in their professional training experiences. Training sessions are held throughout the year every Tuesday night from 7 pm to 10 pm and provide a wide range of basic through advanced Firefighter skills. Certified courses are taught both in house and through professional agencies in cooperation with the Calgary Regional Emergency Services Training Group (CREST) and in compliance with NFPA standards 1001, 1002 and 1041. KES values your employer’s contribution to your career and, through your participation in KES, to our our department. Although your job comes before KES, you must discuss your commitment with your employer and discuss your availability during work hours for emergency calls. Time Commitment: Being a member of the KES is not like belonging to other organizations. Commitment is key and often there is a considerable time contributed on your behalf. Completion of Fire Training: Formal courses are an important part of the training process. It is expected that a firefighter will make all attempts to participate in formal training offered by the department. This training goes a long way toward making the team effective and safer on a fire ground. Callout Availability: The ability to respond to emergency calls is obviously important and we ask that you respond to calls if you are available to do so. Employee responsibilitiesAll Call-Out Firefighters should be professional in attitude and performance. Emergency services tasks can be inherently dangerous and, while every step is taken to ensure the safety of employees, this is both a risky and serious business. Because of this, it is imperative that every member of the fire department takes his or her position on the department seriously and professionally. We are in the business of saving lives and property in our community. We don’t expect you to know everything on day one and encourage you to ask questions if you don’t know or are unsure. The support network is there to help one another. Don’t forget: we all started as probationary Firefighters at one point.
